Nature is the perfect inspiration for guidance on sustaining life, and we benefit from it every day with the food we eat.
While we always look forward to the Autumn harvest and Winter holiday feasts, for now we are inspired by picnics and brunch and fresh meals. The weather is getting warmer and warmer, and there’s nothing like the nutritional reprieve of fresh food in our bodies!
As fruits and vegetables begin to ripen, here’s your friendly reminder that it’s always the perfect time of year to nourish yourself with nutrients straight from nature.

Eating fresh and seasonal faire helps your body sustain itself through the natural dynamic each individual season. Fruits and warm weather vegetables give your body an extra boost of hydration and Vitamin C to fight those seasonal allergies. Spicy foods that make you sweat are also beneficial in temperature regulation by triggering your body’s natural response to release excess heat.
There are also many benefits to eating locally that help support the ecosystem that is community: supporting local farmers and strengthening your local economy. When you shop at a local farmer’s market, you have the added benefit of knowing exactly where your food comes from and the practices used to grow it.

Sweet Union Farm in Klamath Falls is a shining example of how locally grown food strengthens a community. Owner and operator Katie Swanson believes growing good food and making it accessible while taking care of the land is the best thing she can do for her community.
This farm is dedicated to making fresh food accessible to their community, and Katie’s work with just under an acre of land has helped to support other members of her local farming community. Read more about Sweet Union Farms here, and don’t forget to check out a farmer’s market near you!
As we wrap up our theme of Tending for the month of May, remember the grass won’t be greener on the other side if you simply tend to what’s in front of you. Your garden will always be part of an ecosystem, a community that thrives in unison and mutual support.
So if you’re a travel gal in the warmer months, continuing to eat local will help your body better acclimate to the area you’re in, support local farmers in a new place, and you may end up with a new favorite dish you haven’t tried before.
